The San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino is a hotel and casino located on the beach in Condado, San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is operated by Marriott International.

History[edit]

Located 1 km from the centre of San Juan, this impressive San Juan Marriott Resort And Stellaris Casino offers a casino, a sundeck and tennis courts, as well as pleasant views of the ocean. It has 527 rooms on 21 floors. This venue is set in Condado district, 6 km from Casa Blanca.

The hotel was designed by architects Osvaldo L. Toro and Miguel Ferrer and opened on October 4, 1963 as the Puerto Rico-Sheraton Hotel.[1] Directly on the beach in Condado, it boasted an Olympic-sized swimming pool.[2] Sheraton sold the property to the San Juan Dupont Plaza Corp. of Delaware[3] in 1979[4] and it was renamed the Dupont Plaza Hotel.[3]

On December 31, 1986, the Dupont Plaza was the site of the second deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history, started by disgruntled employees in the middle of a labor/salary dispute. The fire claimed 97 lives and caused 140 injuries. The San Juan Dupont Plaza Corp renovated the hotel in 1988, at a cost of $9 million, and renamed it the Palm Hotel and Casino. A reopening was announced for early 1989, but it was cancelled on December 19, 1988, when the Puerto Rican government refused to grant the hotel an operating permit, because the owners had only installed sprinklers in the hotel's first three floors, and not throughout the entire building.[5]

A massive federal trial over the fire began in San Juan on March 15, 1989. It was one of the largest personal damages trials in US history up to that point, with $1.7 billion sought by 2,300 plaintiffs from 250 defendants, including a maze of corporations and subsidiaries involved in the property's ownership.[6]AIG, a lead insurance underwriter supplying coverage for the blaze, ended up acquiring title to the shuttered hotel in June 1989, as part of the settlement of claims arising from the fire.[7]

In October 1992, AIG announced plans to completely renovate the hotel at a cost of $130 million[7] and rebrand it as a Marriott.[8] The hotel reopened on February 16, 1995, as the San Juan Marriott Resort & Casino.[9] It was later renamed slightly, becoming the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. AIG[10] sold the hotel to Rockwood Capital in August 2011 for $133 million.[11] Rockwood Capital resold it in May 2017 to an unnamed Chinese buyer[12] for $184 million.[13]

The San Juan Marriott has 525 hotel rooms and a casino. In addition, the hotel has 8 meeting rooms with a total of 10,900 sq ft (1,010 m2) of meeting space.

In the last few months, Puerto Rico has had good news: visitor and airline numbers are up and they have more accommodation options than ever before.

The island’s tourism efforts are back and better than ever, and hotels like San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino are putting their best foot forward to provide tourists with high-quality and comfortable stays.

In February 2019, the beach-front San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino announced the renovations of their Cabana Wing rooms, the resort’s main restaurant, Gingambo, the Ocean Club Spa & Wellness Center, La Panaderia, the on-site coffee house, and the landscape design of the pool and sundeck area.

Now, it seems that after an initial $20M investment, development firm XLD Group will invest $80M more into the property to renovate the remaining 404 rooms and suites in the main tower.

Guests can expect the rooms to have the same sleek blue-and-gray-toned design and technological additions like optimized work desks, IPTV and wireless charging lamps, found in the Cabana Wing.

“The recent completion of the 123 guest rooms and suites in the Cabana Wing as well as the meticulous renovation of the pool area and the property’s signature restaurant Gingambo, marked a momentous occasion for this resort,” said Joaquín Cruz, director of sales and marketing for San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino.

“The renovation of our 404 rooms in the main tower is set to begin this fall and should be completed by spring 2020. Once all the enhancements are completed, every space and detail throughout the property will embrace the heritage of the island with approachable luxury and the brand’s contemporary design.”

The hotel will continue to operate normally, as the property will only shut down four floors, or about 100 rooms, at a time. The renovations will begin in August and are expected to end by December 2019.

Despite a busy year in 2019, the owners are not slowing down in 2020.

The resort’s meeting spaces and casino will receive makeovers next year. Plus, the resort will open a new sushi and poke bar called Ohan, which will accommodate 10-12 people, near the resort’s casino by summer 2020.
